SEATTLE (AP) — The Northwest roots of Carver Gayton's family go back to 1888, when his grandfather left Mississippi to work for a white doctor who was traveling here.
John Thomas Gayton never left Seattle.
The self-educated family patriarch was a barber and federal court librarian among other things, and went on to become one of this city's most prominent black leaders, helping found First African Methodist Episcopal Church in the Central District.
Now his grandson has been appointed director of the much-anticipated Northwest African American Museum, slated to open in early 2007.
