Stuart graveyard is rich in black history
Almost a century of history rests with Stuart cemetery

STUART — The overseer of a small cemetery here, Richard McHardy is the ferryman who guides the dead on their last journey to the graveyard. The blue-eyed elder, the steward of a historic landmark, traverses other worlds, too. As Martin County observes a holiday commemorating the birthday of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., McHardy, the lone record-keeper at Walter Moore's Cemetery, carries the responsibility of sorting through decades-old receipts to find the final resting places of the departed in Stuart's first blacks-only burial site.
